What is Discord?

Discord is an online service that provides community forums ('servers'), instant messaging, chat, voice conferencing, and video conferencing. It was originally created for computer gamers, but is now used by millions as a safe community platform. Discord is available as a web application in the browser, as a client software on all common operating systems, and of course as an app for mobile devices on Apple iOS and Android. If you reside in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, Discord Netherlands BV is the controller of your personal information (your email, user name and birthdate you give when signing up) as described in Discord's Privacy Policy.

Why is it safe?

Discord allows us to set very specific security settings for the members of a forum (or server). For our forum we have chosen the strictest settings in all categories. These include:

  • New users must have a verified email address, be registered as a user on Discord for longer than 5 minutes and agree to the forum rules & code of conduct
  • All moderators in the forum are people I know in person and whom I fully trust. All moderators must have a two-way authentication enabled in order to execute moderator actions (ban or kick members or delete messages).
  • The "Explicit Media Content filter" is set to the highest setting
  • Only moderators can invite other people to join. So this means new joiners either join after being invited by a trusted, long-term member or they have thorughly read this website and this page, and have then sent me an email with the request to join and their reason for it. This implies intention and real interest. Spammers or Trolls simply won't invest that much energy into it, as it defeats their purpose.

Additionally we have created specific user roles, which will ensure that you have a very good idea with whom you are chatting (see below).

 

How can I join the Happy Introverts community?

  • First, please send me an email with your request to join and kindly let me know your reason for joining. I will reply within max. 3 days with the invite link code.
  • next, you'll need to set up an account on Discord. Go to their website: Discord.com 
  • click on "open Discord in your browser" - enter a user name of your choice
  • you'll have to give your birthdate (I recommend to give the correct year, but either a false month or day, as your real birthdate is a highly security sensitive info in the online world and used for identity verification for countless services)
  • next Discord asks you if you want to create a server. Here, all you need to do is pick the option at the bottom: "You already have an invite? Join the server here"
  • then it asks you for the invite link where you can input the link code you got via email from me.
  • now you have joined our community and Discord asks you for your email and a password, so you can log into Discord in the future.
  • As a security measure, Discord will send a verification request to this email, to make sure it is really yours. You have to verify this, as it is a condition for participating in our forum. Also you have to agree to the forum rules and code of condut.

 

Forum roles

@everyone

this is the basic role that everyone who joins the forum automatically has. In order to join they must:

  • have a verified email login with Discord
  • be registered with Discord for longer than 5 minutes (this prevents spammers)
  • read and accept the forum rules and code of conduct

this role can not

  • send invites to the server to others
  • participate in calls via the voice channel
  • attach files or embed links
  • create private threads
  • @mention groups

 

@Happy Introvert

this is the role you can obtain once you've decided you enjoy our community and plan to keep coming back. By the way - you don't need to be 'happy' all the time 8-)  "Happy Introvert" simply means that you generally enjoy being an introvert with all the cons and pros that it brings.

This role can do all the things that @everyone can't do, except invite new members. The only conditions for this role are:

  • you have been a member of the forum for longer than a month
  • you have participated in the forum with at least four threads or replies to threads in that time

This way we siphon out users who just want to join to, for example, place their personal promotion, for which users will be banned anyhow. Also this gives you the ability to recognize with whom you are talking and the level of trust you can extend to them.

 

This is how to obtain the role:

  1. Go to the channel "Forum FAQ" - then to the thread "Forum role change" 
  2. Reply to that thread with your request and kindly let us know your feedback and any ideas for the community forum

 

With time, and as the forum grows, we'll introduce more roles in order to help you feel safe in the forum.
